Prosecutor Office Terms
- Chief prosecutor - The elected or State-appointed head of the prosecutorial district.
- Assistant prosecutor - Any employee of the chief prosecutor licensed to practice law and litigating criminal cases. Excludes attorneys in non-litigating positions.
- Supervisory attorneys - Attorneys in managerial positions litigating cases.
- Civil attorneys - Any employee of the chief prosecutor licensed to practice law and litigating civil cases. Excludes attorneys in non-litigating positions.
- Part-time - Refers to any employee who works less than a standard workweek and includes job sharing.
- Managers - Attorneys or non-attorneys in primarily managerial positions who do not litigate cases.
- Legal services - Includes law clerks and paralegals.
- Support staff - Includes administrative staff, clerical staff, computer personnel and fiscal officers.
- Budget - Refers to the total budget of the office for prosecutorial functions in 2000.
- Closed Case - Any case with a judgment of conviction, acquittal, or dismissal with or without prejudice, entered by the court.
- Felony - If this term is not used in the State, "felony" refers to any charge in which the defendant, if convicted, could be sentenced to one year or more in a State prison facility.
- Misdemeanor - If this term is not used in the State, "misdemeanor" refers to any charge in which the defendant, if convicted, could be sentenced to less than one year in a State prison facility.

- District - In each State, prosecutors' offices have jurisdiction over a specific geographic area. This district may be coterminous with the State's judicial districts. Districts may also be comprised of one or more counties, independent cities or other local municipalities.
- County - A territorial division of most States which may be used for certain purposes in the administration of justice and public affairs.
- Independent City - An independent city is responsible for both municipal and county functions. Examples of independent cities are Anchorage, Alaska; Baltimore, Maryland; Carson City, Nevada; Saint Louis, Missouri.
- Municipality - A municipality is an administrative locality within a State generally composed of a clearly defined territory and commonly referring to a city, town, or village government.
- Parish - A civil division in Louisiana corresponding to a county in other States.
